RENEWABLE ENERGY

RENEWABLE ENERGY

As we travel around the world, we are acutely aware of the impact large-scale events have on local communities and the environment. Global sports events produce a large amount of CO emissions annually, leaving a significant imprint on the places we visit whether this is from waste disposal, energy usage or fan travel.

However, we believe in a different narrative - one where the thrill of competing coincides with a deep respect for local communities and their environment. Join us in our mission to tread lightly on the planet, championing sustainability as an integral part of our journey through renewable energy installations and a variety of purpose-led activities at all SailGP events.

LOW CARBON PORTABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY INSTALLATION

One way the Team has been reducing its impact is creating a bespoke portable renewable energy installation with our partner Low Carbon.

The installation consists of 38 solar panels and two micro wind turbines that travel with the team to all race locations around the world. The equipment travels to each race in SailGP’s shared shipping containers, using more sustainable methods of transport through their partnership with Kuehne+Nagel.

Across five SailGP Events in Season 4, the installation produced enough energy to take the Team off-grid and also power other teams, producing 1,376kWh of clean energy, equivalent to removing 400kg/CO2 or powering 1,490 fridge freezers for a day.

The installation is the first-of-its-kind in sport and both Emirates GBR and Low Carbon hope it will encourage other sports teams and industries to adopt.

LOW CARBON PORTABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY BLUEPRINT

The success of our portable renewable energy installation has enabled Low Carbon to create the Portable Renewable Energy Blueprint, a ground-breaking guide for sports teams worldwide.

Athletes wield unparalleled influence. By proactively adopting eco-friendly practices and clean energy, they can inspire a global movement towards sustainability.

The blueprint equips organisations with the knowledge, information, and contacts necessary to implement renewable energy systems. Born from the success of our bespoke solar and wind installation,

DUBAI / COP28

The renewables blueprint has been published as part of Energy Day at the COP28 conference and ahead of the final SailGP race of 2023 taking place in Dubai on 9 and 10 December.

Emirates GBR Driver and CEO, Sir Ben Ainslie, said: “As a sports team we are privileged to be able to travel around the world doing what we love, but we are aware that this has an impact. As a Team, we wanted to take action and incorporate renewable energy into our operations so that we were not drawing from resources of the communities at event locations. Our partnership with Low Carbon enabled us to create a unique mobile solar and wind installation that takes us off-grid at events. It has been a huge success and we decided to share all the learnings from creating and implementing this to other sports teams and industries to make it easy and simple for them to adopt renewable energy. There is no reason to not take action, climate change is happening now and by working together we can make a difference.”

Chief Executive and Founder of Low Carbon, Roy Bedlow said: “Sport has the ability to inspire like nothing else. Low Carbon is focused on creating as much renewable energy as possible to tackle climate change and we want to use our platform as a sustainable company to encourage a shift away from fossil fuels without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
